𝘿𝙞𝙡𝙞, 07, 𝙅𝙪𝙡𝙮 2026 – The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), through the National Directorate of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection, together with the delegation from the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and representatives from the UK Embassy, ADB, and the European Union, held a ceremony on “𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘸”, at the MCI Hall, Fomentu Mandarin, Dili.
The event also included participation from an Advisor representing the FCDO and a representative from ADB TLRM.
The objective of the ceremony was to gather opinions and input from line ministries and private sector representatives on the review process of the Consumer Protection Law. The law, first introduced in 2016, now requires alignment with the ASEAN Framework and WTO standards to ensure implementation in accordance with international rules and procedures.
Director General of Commerce, Mr. Elias de Jesus Fatima, representing the Minister and Vice-Minister of MCI, officially opened the ceremony. In his remarks, he emphasized MCI’s commitment to developing a regulatory system that is transparent, effective, and evidence-based.
“This system is crucial to protect consumers, promote healthy competition, facilitate trade, and create an attractive environment for investment,” he stated.
The Director General also expressed gratitude to OPSS and the UK Embassy for their continued technical support and partnership, hoping that this program will deliver positive results and further strengthen cooperation between Timor-Leste and the United Kingdom.
Today’s activity involved participants from ITC, CTT, ministerial lines, public institutions, AIFAESA, BCTL, as well as the private sector including consumer associations, CCI-TL, and cooperative groups.
With the involvement of all relevant stakeholders, MCI expects that the outcome of this review will directly benefit consumers and the commercial community across the country.
