The delegation was led by His Excellency Francisco Assis, Chair of the OACPS-EU Parliamentary Assembly and Member of the European Parliament from Portugal. The group also included several other Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), representing diverse political groupings and countries across the European Union. During the meeting, Minister Monteiro presented Timor-Leste’s petroleum sector priorities, highlighting the conclusions of the Greater Sunrise Concept Select Study, which confirmed that Timor-Leste LNG (TLNG) is technically feasible and, among all options assessed, the most commercially viable and economically advantageous development pathway. The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s intention to continue advancing this preferred option. Minister Monteiro also provided an update on the Bayu-Undan redevelopment, which aims to progress both gas production and carbon capture and storage (CCS) in parallel, aligned with Timor-Leste’s strategic vision for value creation, energy transition, and infrastructure utilisation. The Minister further elaborated on the mining sector, noting that while still in the early stages of development, Timor-Leste has made steady progress in building its institutional and legal foundations. Minister Monteiro welcomed European engagement with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Members of the European Parliament expressed interest in exploring opportunities for future cooperation and support. The visit was part of a wider EU fact-finding mission to assess Timor-Leste’s development trajectory and areas for deeper partnership within the context of the OACPS-EU framework. END.
